Utrecht host Dutch Life Sciences & Health Conference 2011

The Dutch government has listed Life Sciences as one of the ‘top sectors’ for specific actions, indicating Life Sciences as an important sector for the Dutch economy. The top team kicked off its series of meetings within the country with a meeting at Utrecht Science Park where it met with the Amsterdam and Utrecht region.


The Utrecht region has proven to be an important driver within the Life Sciences sector. The region holds the highest ranking University of the Netherlands, Utrecht University, which incorporates the University Medical Center Utrecht, the globally renowned Hubrecht institute and the only faculty of veterinary medicine. Besides these knowledge institutes the region also houses numerous companies working in this sector, such as Merus Biopharmaceuticals, Genmab, Crossbeta Biosciences and many more (see www.utrechtsciencepark.nl for all company names). Moreover Utrecht was named as the most innovative European region in 2010 by the European Joint Research committee.

Utrecht is located conveniently right at the heart of the Netherlands with easy access to Schiphol international airport, but also to other major cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Eindhoven. Utrecht has the highest educated population within the Netherlands and offers a wide diversity of living opportunities in bustling urban locations or in peaceful rural surroundings.

The focal point of Life Sciences in the region comes together at Utrecht Science Park, where a cluster of more than 60 companies and more than 20 research institutes are clustered. Utrecht Science Park closely with other towns and cities in the vicinity such as Bilthoven, where RIVM is located, Zeist, Bunnik and Amersfoort. These satellites from part of a closely knit network that stretches beyond the borders of Utrecht Science Park.

Together with the partners in the region, Utrecht offers an excellent breeding ground for setting up companies, and the open culture ensures that cooperation and partnerships find willing partners.

Utrecht Valorisation Center is a portal created to serve staff and students of knowledge institutions as well as external parties seeking partnership in the application of knowledge. We offer broad support to researchers, staff and external partners during the valorisation process.

Besides the investors also the conference participants had the opportunity to vote for the best start-up company. Glycocheck was selected as the winner of the Public Award Investors forum. According to the participants the entrepreneurial skills of the Glycocheck team together with the companies business model make Glycocheck the most promising company.

Glycocheck’s team, Jonathon de Jonge and Pieter Goedhart received a meet & greet diner cheque from Iventus.  The cheque can be used for a networking diner with a CEO of the winners choice and which will organised by Iventus.
